I thought living in Africa with lots of wildlife close by might be really neat. But I learned from my pen pal that wildlife and people don't always get along. Sometimes hippos come during the night and eat all the crops. For subsistence farmers, this is a big problem.

I was surprised to learn from my pen pal that she had never seen an elephant, or some other African animals like leopards or zebras, ... even though all of these animals live in Malawi.

Some Malawians only see animals, like this spotted hyena, in zoos.
