Leopard in Nyika National Park
There are many leopards found in Nyika National Park in the northern part of Malawi. Nykia is a beautiful park located near Mzuzu at an elevation of nearly 8,000 feet. The rolling hills are reminiscient of the Scottish highlands.
Leopards are the most feared of the wild cats in Africa, due to their cunning hunting behavior. They are great climbers and will sometimes be seen sitting in a tree. In Nyika, they can easily hide among the vast fields of dense ferns. Once a kill is made, the leopard may drag it up a tree where it can be guarded from other predators.
Leopard hides have long been valued by people in the U.S. and Europe for making fur coats. This fashion popularity has led to declining numbers of leopards in the wilds.
