Lake Malawi National Park was founded in 1980 to protect a diverse group of colorful fish known as cichlids. In order to better understand these fish and the other many other unique features of the park an environmental education center and aquaria have been established here.
World Wildlife Fund and the U.S. Peace Corps have helped to provide facilities and expertise for environmental education programs here.
Located near Monkey Bay, Lake Malawi National Park welcomes visitors. When transportation is available, Malawian school groups are brought to the park to learn about the lake and the fish. There are student hostels and modest tourist accommodations in addition to camp sites. Visitors should bring their own food as there are no markets in the park.
